demons aren’t fallen angels

I know this topic isn’t super duper popular, especially for Christians who would rather pretend demons don't exist or downplay the fact that we are very much in a spiritual war. But because the truth is so important, I have to get this out. Nowhere in Scripture are demons ever attributed to being fallen angels. To say that they are is to put tradition above God’s Word, and we really shouldn’t be doing that (Mark 7:7-9).

Here is the reason why demons, or unclean spirits, aren’t fallen angels: angels can put on a human-like body, while demons are searching for one. We see angels can appear human in Genesis 6:2 when the sons of God married the daughters of men. These sons were angels (Job 1:6, Job 38:4-6), and to get married (which is by having sex, by the way, more on that here), they would need a body to do that. We also see that angels can assume human form and pose as strangers seen in Hebrews 13:2.

This contrasts greatly with the description of demons. They instead search for a body to inhabit, as seen in Matthew 12:43-45, which shows that they can’t assume a human form, unlike angels. This, along with other passages, shows that unclean spirits are uncomfortable with being disembodied (Matthew 8:28-34), unlike angels, who, as spirits, don’t necessarily have bodies all the time (Hebrews 1:14).

This inevitably brings up another question: if demons aren’t fallen angels, where did they come from? People have a lot of theories about this, but we don’t rely on theories; we have Scripture, and in Scripture, there is no exact verse that says the origin of these demonic beings. What we can know for sure is that God allowed them to be here for His perfect reasons and that they have no power over us if we have on our full armor of God (Psalm 18:30, Ephesians 6:10-18).

So, like with all things I say, don’t just run with it. Please go to God and test what I say against His Word. In doing so, He can guide you to all truth.
