God is who we need
So I am still in my season of lack, and something that I’ve learned recently is that not only has money been controlling me, but I’ve been putting God in a box (Psalm 78:40–42). Inundated with all of these bills, I cried out to God constantly, saying I need money. Seeing bank accounts shrink caused anxiety. Seeing calls from creditors caused tears. It’s clear, looking at my actions, that my heart is still conditioned to behave as the world does. If money isn’t there, it’s a crisis. When money is there, everything is fine. My heart has been believing those lies. And that’s exactly what they are: lies.
God’s power is not limited to how much is in my bank account, and He is certainly not limited by the fact that the rental office, creditors, and the rest of the world want money to change hands. I was letting this temporary world make me forget that when I needed food, God blessed me with a $100 gift card to Mama Mancini’s that I won on a game show sweepstakes of all things. That blessing, including the amazing miracles in the Bible like Elijah being fed with ravens and God clearing the widow’s debt and saving her sons with oil that He supernaturally kept flowing, became lost in the sea of temporary despair.
In those moments, I couldn’t see how, since the beginning, He has been orchestrating my life down to the tiniest details. That orchestration is what is allowing me to peacefully type these words today. He is the reason that I can say that rent was paid for August and September, and why I can trust Him and say that even when I don’t have the money right now, rent will be taken care of for October and beyond, because He has been sustaining me since He formed me in my mother’s womb.
So from now on I will no longer say that I need money because I don’t. What I need from God is Him to be who He says He is. And He says He will make sure I have my daily bread because He knows I need it (Matthew 6:25-34), and He can allow me to have that however He pleases. If that means somehow, some way, rent is waived for the month, or I get the money instead, so be it. I am not going to put Him in a box anymore, and I hope that you don’t either.
So remember, God is everything that we need (Matthew 4:4). Not money, not food, just God, and our God is so faithful we can trust that He will sustain us no matter what.
